Two days of being in a vibrant, engaging and international environment was a weekend well spent. The students at the Red Cross United Nordic College, who study here for two years before they go on to further studies or start careers, are everything else but bored. There is an overall engaging manner and warmth that welcomes all visitors from the start.
There is hardly a nationality missing here
The students are from all over the world. Lithuania, Pakistan, Thailand, Canada, UK, Palestine, Madagascar, Faroe Islands, Poland, Venezuela, Germany, India, Brasil, Norway, Venezuela, Israel, China and more!
The common language is English
They have just finished a letter writing marathon for
Amnesty International where students sat through a whole day and hand wrote letter after letter on various Amnesty cases! They do this every year and sometimes they receive answers from the governments, as while I was there, they heard back from the Canadian government on a case involving indigenous people.
On Friday evening at the Forum they learnt about Amnesty’s work and how they can get involved in the new campaign ‘Join our fight’ for protecting the people from literally being bulldozed out of their homes in a slum area in Nairobi, Kenya.
Always something going on
On Saturday morning the Amnesty breakfast meeting is interrupted by a loud role play initiated by the Serbian national team on First Aid, who are training in the area. The scenario involves smoke screens and ‘hysteria’. They are learning how to rescue people in a fire. After watching impressively for a few minutes we carry on our meeting. The Amnesty group at the college is involved in many activities throughout the year.
Join our fight
The Amnesty group at the school is lead by a teacher, Paulina from Poland. She is the constant link between the students and Amnesty, which ensures continuity. Together we watch a short film on the situation of how difficult and dangerous it is to go the the toilett in the slum area of Kibera, Kenya. Check it out on
slumstories.org.
Read some of the comments they had after the workshop. We look forward to hearing about your plans for the launch of the ‘Join our fight’ campaign at your college!
Thanks for all the good work you do!
