Amnesty Moldova has recently signed a cooperation agreement with the Ministry of Education in Moldova, that presumes the introduction of the subject ‘I have the right to know my rights’ as an optional elective for 7th or 8th grade students from September 2011, which motivated the UN Moldova award. The human rights education course ‘I have the right to know my rights’ is based on education material Amnesty Moldova developed during the Rights Education Action Programme (REAP), coordinated by AI Norway. During the REAP project a number of 167 teachers were trained to teach the course and almost all of the teachers have managed to use the course’s material in schools or for extracurricular activities with their students.

“It is an act of courage for one to give an award for education as this domain is less palpable, its impact being seen after generations”, said Cristina Pereteatcu, Executive Director of Amnesty International Moldova. “Hopefully, years on or maybe sooner we will realise that despite being different we are equal and have the same set of rights, and that Amnesty International Moldova’s efforts through its subject ‘I Have the Right to Know My Rights’ were not in vain.”

Lilia Savciuc, Program Coordinator for Human Rights Education, said: “It is welcome that our children may study human rights as a separate subject. However, supporting material for teachers exists only on CDs, as the Government did not earmark funds for printing of materials and training of all teachers. It is important that authorities do not stop half-way in executing their duties.”
