The International Human Rights Education Centre (IHREC) was established at the beginning of 2011 as a centre of competence, to ensure that the broader organisation of Amnesty International benefits from the human rights education expertise and resources available at Amnesty International in Norway.

The Centre plays a coordination role and works together with the rest of the movement to achieve human rights change through various forms of human rights education.

The strategic directions of the IHREC are:

• To be a knowledge centre for the human rights education work (projects, programmes, initiatives) being carried out in Amnesty International sections globally and contribute to the collective knowledge pool of Amnesty International’s human rights education work.

• To provide advice and support to Amnesty International sections and structures regarding human rights education practice.

• To show the impact of human rights education.

• To facilitate international human rights education projects/programmes as part of Amnesty International’s overall strategy and be involved in the project planning with sections and structures from the beginning with a focus on certain countries.

• To support fundraising efforts for human rights education at all levels.

Management
The IHREC is operationally included within Amnesty’s International human rights education framework, but is hosted by Amnesty International in Norway.

The staff of the IHREC is based in Oslo at Amnesty International in Norway’s offices.
